Top Seven Things to Know About Me

Here’s my backstory (I’ll try to keep it brief).

#7 First Books
I wrote my first book when I was about nine or ten.  It had talking animals.  Like seriously. Animals. That. Talked. Good thing for everyone, I dropped that quickly and moved on to people that talked. My first REAL book (you know, that I got paid for) was a book of plays that I had written for my students.

#6 Things I Hate (the short list)
The little wooden spoons they give you with ice cream at Dodgers games (oiy, just the thought is making me clench my teeth in agony); and laundry (especially socks—how I end up with so many single socks is a mystery since everyone in my family has two feet.)

#5 Things I Love (the short list): Lists (just ask my kids; I make them all the time—sometimes in duplicate!);  dark chocolate (okay, any kind of chocolate).

#4 Books I Would Take to a Deserted Island: The first Harry Potter book; A Fault in Our Stars by John Green; Divergent by Veronica Roth; A Time to Kill by John Grisham; and the Bible

#3 Favorite Races:
The L.A. Marathon (got to run Hollywood Boulevard); the San Francisco Half Marathon (over the Golden Gate Bridge!); a triathlon through California Adventure Theme Park; the Camp Pendleton Mud Run.

#2 Why I Wrote LOSING IT: I coach middle school cross country.  Every year I have kids who come out to run who are not runners when they show up.  They finish last and every run is tougher than tough.  But they keep trying.  Bennett represents all of them—the kids who aren’t afraid to finish last.

#1 Hardest Thing I've Ever Done:  I climbed the highest mountain in the United States (well, not including Alaska.)  It’s a mountain called Mt. Whitney in California and it’s over 14,000 feet tall.  It took me 17 hours to get up and then down it and it was extremely challenging.  We started at 4am and didn’t finish until 9pm.  But it was amazing to do it–though I don’t think I ever want to do it again!

Erin Fry has a couple of things she would consider passions: reading, writing, running, and teaching. And though it has taken a while to get here, she now gets to do all four of them--and get paid!

Author Bio (though if you are still reading, I will assume that you are extremely bored or locked in a dungeon with only my website to look at)
For thirteen years, Erin Fry has taught 6th grade language arts and history at a middle school in southern California. Every fall, she happily coaches cross country, which has taught her about running, determination, and just how loud middle schoolers get on a bus.

Her first middle grade novel, LOSING IT, about an overweight boy who joins the cross country team, was published in 2012 by Amazon Children's Publishing. Her second novel, SECRETS OF THE BOOK (Two Lions) hit shelves in February, 2014. And her first YA serial, THE BENEFACTOR (Skyscape), was published in 2013.

In 2003, on a break from teaching, Fry was hired by Teachers' Curriculum Institute, where for six years, she wrote social studies curriculum, textbooks, and assessment. That same year, she started reviewing Kidlit for Publishers Weekly and hasn’t stopped. Recently, she and a fellow lesson developer co-founded Curriculum Specialists, through which they write standards-aligned Teachers’ Guides for authors and publishers.

When she's not teaching or writing, Fry is most likely hiking, running, or cheering for Cal Berkeley where her oldest son is a freshman (Go Bears!). In 2013, along with her husband and oldest son, she summited Mt. Whitney in one day. This summer she plans to hike Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.
